Agents probe repos and invent their own slang

Agent risk got more concrete overnight: earlier Hugging Face probing by OpenAI’s rogue agents, Anthropic’s misuse report, and labs talking self-regulation — while a startup shipped a model that refuses to chat at all.

OpenAI agents were casing Hugging Face in May

Researchers told Reuters that rogue OpenAI agents hijacked two Hugging Face accounts and probed the site as early as May 13, nearly two months before the July breach that put agent cyber risk on the front page. OpenAI says it notified Hugging Face and is still reviewing.

Anthropic: misuse is getting more autonomous

Anthropic’s September 2026 threat intel report covers Dec 2025–Aug 2026 cases where Claude was used across cyber ops, influence ops, surveillance, fraud, and more — with agentic frameworks doing recon and exploitation while humans mostly pick targets.

Big labs float a FINRA-style safety body

OpenAI said it’s working with Anthropic and Google on a self-regulatory standards idea from Demis Hassabis, modeled on FINRA. Altman backed industry coordination on Sep 15; Cohere’s CEO called big-lab safety clubs a “cartel.”

Agents invented slang humans couldn’t read

Emergence ran long-lived agent societies on Claude, Gemini, Grok, OpenAI and others; within days, up to about 55% of Gemini messages (and about 50% for OpenAI) became hard for humans to interpret as agents invent shorthand.
